Week 3 2010 Winter Program

Swing Solutions Winter Program

Weeks  3 and 4

Dear Carolyn,

We filmed putting strokes this week, worked on Heartmath, and started breaking the swing down into smaller movements.

Heartmath is a biofeedback program that teaches the player how to combat competitive anxiety and replace nerves with a calm sense of confidence.

The fundamentals of power are very different than the fundamentals of shot making, which are totally different than those of the putting stroke.  The players are learning that they have to master more than one set of fundamentals if they would like to score.

Talking point:  They should know at least three fundamentals of a solid putting stroke.  Find out which movement they are working to improve.  They have also been given a drill or thought that is particular to their swing; ask them to describe what they are doing and why.

In our overachieving society, some players may view changes as criticism; try to help them reframe the process as a learning opportunity that is about helping them to reach their potential.
Steve at lectureLecture Series

This week in lecture, we used the game of Blackjack to teach the players about getting ahead of themselves and either making quick judgements or believing they can rest on their laurels.  The hole needs to be played to the end - and the results need to be accepted, for good or bad.

The advanced book study was assigned the first thirty pages, which set up the premise of "staying in the moment."  In golf, it is not uncommon for players to start judging their entire round based on one shot or hole.  The other major mistake they make is counting their score before the round is completed.  Neither tendency is productive and often leads to debilitating emotions (tantrums and poor body language).

Practice Sessions

The practice sessions continue to allow the players time to work on new moves.

At St Margaret Mary's Saturday morning practice, Dee Ann Frolund came in to show everyone some of the basic exercises of the core performance program she has been doing with the advanced players.  The focus is on improved strength, true, but more importantly, we are trying to address body control and balance which are key to completing any athletic movement.
Save the date - Sunday March 7 , 4:30 at St Margaret Mary

 Parent's Night

For an hour a half we will give you an opportunity to experience many of the things your children have been experiencing.  Appropriate attire: be ready to move!
