Swing Solutions Winter Program

February 25, 2011

Dear Subscriber,

Only in Wisconsin can we take 100 people and actively run a golf program in the middle of the Winter!  Many times I think we are envious of our fellow citizens in the southern part of the US, but I have travelled extensively and I find that folks who experience winter are heartier, more imaginative and willing to go the extra distance in order to achieve their goals.

As a teacher, I like the constraints that Winter puts on golf students: it forces us to switch from ball flight to body awareness.  The motion the body is required make in order to perform a solid golf swing is what we are trying so hard capture for each student, regardless of whether it is a full swing, a creative chip or the relatively small arc of a putt.

As we move into the next four weeks, our goal is to bring each student around to a solid concept for their swing, give them ideas to ponder and see how far outside the box we can wander without going backwards.

Sincerely,

Carolyn Barnett-Howe

Parents and Players Save the Date!
Sunday March 6 at St Margaret Mary, 3:30-5:00/Monday 4:00 at Swing Solutions

Speaker Todd Monger

LPCC, NCC, ACM

Todd Monger
Todd Monger

Todd Monger will be our guest speaker presenting three concepts that will help the listener understand the importance of interruptions and distractions during a golf round.  Whether self-inflicted or the result of external forces, a mind that is unfocused is less efficient.  Nervousness, uncertainty, a lack of confidence in competitive situations are all the antithesis of a focused mind.

Todd's lecture will take the place of our normal lectures for Saturday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday March 5-9.  Todd will present the lecture Sunday March 6, 3:30-5:00 at St Margaret Mary's and then repeat that lecture on Monday at 4:00 at Swing Solutions.  This presentation is for parents and players

Each year, Todd stays with us to provide a series of small breakout groups so that we can help the players with topics that may be specific to them.  This is a wonderful opportunity to experience sports psychology at a very reasonable cost.  The link below gives you the topics and the times.  Ask Carolyn if you are uncertain which is appropriate for you.

 Lecture and Breakout Schedule

Spring Break Trip to PGA Village

If you are unable to join us this year, consider putting it on your calendar for next year!

For those of you who are coming with us this year, we will start collecting for the student package fees as well as condo fees. These need to be in before we leave, March 18.   We will invoice the extras (rounds of golf beyond the package and extra nights or meals) when we return.

Take Care Everyone,

Spring Break Trip!
Dr. John Konsek
Dr. John Konsek
Thank you Dr Konsek!

John Konsek is a local treasure that we like to introduce to our Swing Solutions students.

How is this for a resume:

Entered Purdue University at the age of 16, where he went on to win three Big Ten Championships during a time when Jack Nicklaus also competed.

He came in 2nd in the NCAA Championship and represented the US in the Walker Cup against Europe.  He played in 2 US Open Championships before entering medical school at the age of 20.

Jack Nicklaus quipped, "The best thing that ever happened for my golf career, is that John Konsek chose medicine."

John and his wife reside here in the Valley, splitting time with various Boards and charitable activities as well as enjoying grandparenting duties in Sheboygan and South Carolina.  A "hockey dad" for thirty years, John did not play much golf while his children were growing up.  In his retirement, John has returned to golf and can be found roaming the fairways of North Shore CC (under par, of course)!

Steve and I like John's very simple approach to practice, competing and success - our hope is that the students took some small piece from that lecture to apply to their games!

Massage Anyone?

Just an FYI - I am still upright, walking and competing because of the help I receive from the physical therapists at OST (I have an 'in'), and the massage therapist at OST (another 'in').

After five knee surgeries, back surgery and an achilles tear, I have 'issues!'  I rely on these folks to help me identify the imbalances that so often make me uncomfortable - and personally, I think they rock!

Think of scheduling a massage for yourself with Dee while you have to wait for your child to finish their instruction - I promise you will have a whole new take on being the cab driver for the evening!
